383.. Commando or Magnum

I recently purchsed a 383 out of a 1966 Chrysler Windsor. It is a Canadian car with the 383 painted a factory red color.

Someone said this may be a commando or magnum engine.

How do I tell.. Numbers on the block?? where??

Is there a site I can punch the numbers into and come out with the specs on this motor??

it only has 80,000 miles on it and when last run was a real strong puller.

Thanx

USA info only, Canada is probably the same:

Magnums did not come out until 1968.

If it is a 4bbl 383 before 1968 then it is a Commando.

Commandos were the name only Plymouth used - I think Dodges were Super Red Rams - they may have just been called "4 Barrel", and Hi-Po Chryslers were called "TNT"s, in that era.

Commando is a Plymouth term for their Hi-Po motors.
Magnum is Dodge, TNT is Chrysler.

John - wasn't "Magnum" used for '68 and later? I think '67 and prior Dodges were just labled "4 BARREL", weren't they?

Info on the TNTs would be in any Motors or Chilton manual covering those years. They were not really a high performance engine - just a little hotter than the base ones.

T-N-T stood for "T"win intake,( twin snorkel air cleaner) -"N" "Twin exhaust. The motors were ( from my understanding) the basic units 2 or 4BBL. Magnums (dodge) and Commandos ( Plymouth)were the HP units with the big heads and the HP cams. I believe 67 for Plymouth and 68 for dodge.

"Commando" was used by Plymouth at least back to '59, relacing I believe the "Fury" designation.

Let's see, in 1968 the RR engine came out with the HP cam and heads. So in 1968 Dodges with the similar set up were called 383 Magnums. Plymouths with the similar set up (not Road Runners) were called 383 Super Commandos.

Prior to 1968 383's were just called "383 4 BBL's".

In 1967 the first 440 HP came out in the Plymouth GTX and Dodge
Coronet R/T.

As for the TNT engine, if it's better than the base engine what are the HP upgrades ?

I'm not altogether sure, but I think the only upgrade was a 4 barrel carb. Maybe a hotter cam. My '67 Imperial has a 4 barrel/440, but only says "Imperial" on the air cleaner. The other Chrysler 440/4 bbls said "TNT", I'm pretty sure. Like Newports, New Yorkers and 300s.

This is beginning to sound like a "trivia" game!
