Default dodge dart 1/4 mile time

HEY GUYS! I was woundering an estimate on my '74 dodge dart swingers 1/4 mile time. It has a 318 that runs well, and everything else is stock(rear end has 2.76 gears). On the door jam it says that the car weights 2460#. I was thinking it would run in the high 16's, low 17's. ThAnKs AlL!........SWINGER

COMPLETELY guessing on cam specs.... and compression, and everything but the size of your engine.... aslo guessing on tranny type, and tire size, i estimate 14.72@92mph...

the more detail you give me, the more accurate the estimate will be

some things...
piston type
cam specs
tranny type (727, 904)
valve sizes in heads
altitude
avg temp outside
exhaust (type and size)
intake
carb cfm's/type
rear tire size

the more you can give me, the better

Stock 318? 2bbl?

with 276 gears?

I think your 16 or 17 guess is right. Even if you have hopped up the motor you won't do much better because of the gears.

Gear change might get you into high 15's. I see big block cars running 15's all the time.

My 2 cents

Default 318

The 318 is a 2 barrel, pistons are flat top(stock),cam is stock .387-.397 cam. 904 tranny. valves in head are 1.74(exhuast), 1.50(intake), exhuast is stock single. Intake stock. Carb is im guessing a 200-300 cfm. Rear tires are 195/r75/14. The altitude is 4500-4900ft, im in colorado. temp is like 70's-90's.

I have a 72 about the same spec as yours. Ran a blistering 16.92 two times out of three. Seems like it was around 85 mph.

Denver, eh?

Thats pretty high. You'll be doing well to see the 16's.

No shame in it, it's reality. Every guy who's never been to the track, thinks they have 350 hp, and a 13 second car. Very few meet the bill.

My posted time (15.5 at 5000lbs) has lot's of guys in cars so mad, they won't talk to me at the track.

5 liter mustangs run 15-16 seconds in stock form.
FI pickups(with some add ons) run in the 17's(except for high output special editions, like lightenings, run in high 14's)

72rr, your calculations are probably off, because of the weight #. In stock form, with driver, that car is more like 3400 lbs.

I'm no expert. I've just been watching what the cars run at the track, and how many of them are slower than my 5000 pound van. It's quite a few.

My 3300 pound 73 Dart Sport with 284/484 cam, stock trans, and 3.55 gears went 14.75.

My 3800 pound 69 Polara with a 383 2 barrel and 2.76 gears went 17.10.

I think this Dart at altitude will go a 16.9999.

My 4600#? 86 D-150 with 3.55 gears and a stock 360 went 17.92 with a 600 Edelbrock and 16.83 with a 575 Road Demon, no other changes at AD of 2650.

My BBC Motorhome would probably run 38.5 and the 3220# 318 Cuda....that's a whole different story

I give your Dart a 17.61 in Denver

High 16's at a lower altitude maybe, but more like what cuda66273 has estimated at a track where you live. With a 3.23 gear you could get to the lower 16's easily, with high 15's just a 4bbl and headers away (altitude-corrected times).

It might bench-race a 14.75 in Garden City, Kansas though. Horsepower ratings seem to be a lot higher there for some reason.

17 to 18 secs. is what I would guess. Pretty high up in altitude plus the car weighs more like 3400 lbs. Mine weighs 3450 with a full tank of gas. 3600 lbs with me in it. On street radials I ran 14.1 @ 96 mph @ 2200 ft elevation. Look at what's in my 340 compared to your stock 318. That time is without the NOS. Give it a try and let us know!

The Cuda would run a 10 flat there....

Jeez, hope we didn't scare the new guy away! I was just trying to generate a little comic relief and bring the estimates down to earth, or at least down to the Rockies anyway.

Swingers are pretty neat looking cars. Lighter than some, a real good car to play around with especially if they had a V8 already. Lots of ways to get them down the road in a big hurry with not a lot of bucks. A friend just picked up a bonafide little old lady going to church slant 6 2door. Real clean on the inside and outside, polished up nice. He got some wheels and tires on it already and that makes it look tough, so now the search for a 360 is on......

I agree.

74 dart swinger, don't think this board is full of catty people. There is a verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy long history behind 72 rr and his motor.

We could go into details, but I don't think that's necessary.

Some of it can be seen in the thread "DAMMIT WHY!!??" It still can be read, but not replied to.

We are quite civilized and polite, except when I bug 345 dart about his little block... LOL

Seriously though, we are all decent mopar people. I have met some of them off of the boards, and was very pleased to do so.

I had a '71 Sebring with 318 auto and 2.73 grears. Did a 17 second 1/4

cuda,

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. All everybody was trying to do was tell him to get more opinions than just "his DAD and his machinist" and he would just have none of it. Maybe after the same 340 blows for the 5th time he'll get it right. He should post a thread titled "How to Ruin a Perfectly Good Satellite"

We all don't always see eye to eye on things, but overall i thing we are a very good group of communicators and we are pretty darn civilized.

The dart should fare a little better than the Sebring based on the whole weight thing, but it really depends on the driver and how good a motor it's got. I say low 17's. The 73's and 74's though have a lot more rubber in the suspension to give it a softer ride which hinders performance though.

The whole fun of this performance thing is doing a little at a time and noticing the changes along the way. But once you get to that 14 sec. mark, then you want to do 13, then 12, then............ you know what happens next.
