What is the stock converter stall RPM for the 46re (518) with tow package? Thinking of a new converter and higher stall RPM.

You can check this yourself easily. Hold your foot on the brake firmly and hit the gas. the rpms the motor climbs to without breaking the tires loose is your stall speed. Don't hold it for more than 5 seconds. You can burn your fluid and overheat the trans. After checking your stall, drive it for a few miles to "cool " everything off. This won't hurt the trans unless you hold it for a while. Smoebody here may have the factory spec, but that is a ballpark number. The actual stall depends on several factors. I believe that the stock converters are around 1800 Rpm. I could be wrong.

I had heard that it was around 1600 which sounds low to me. With 3.55 gears she's a little slow off the line. Would like to pick the launch up a little bit.

I have tried to measure the Torque Converter stall speed on my 1995 5.9V8 auto.
It seems to be around 1800 rpm as best I can tell. |

You also have to remember that the true stall of the converter depends upon the torque output of the engine. Although my converter is rated at 2200-2500, it'll stall at 2700. I had thought the stock one is 1400 rpm but I'm not really sure.

Where can I find the HP and Torque curve of the 99 5.9 Engine. It makes sense that The converter should lock at maximum Torque. What happens on the HWY when the overdrive kicks in and the RPM drops below the stall RPM. Does the conv. slip and heat the trans. fluid or is there a solenoid or swith to lock it up?

full lock up for the 46re tranny is 2300.
you have a 3 stage Torque Converter first lock up is 1200-1400rpm 2 lock up is 1600-1800rpm and full lock up is 2100-2300rpm cmyindy |

what do you mean why lock rpm speed? Wouldn't there only be one number not multiple lock speeds? Disregarding powerbreaking with the stock torque converter if you floor it in first off the line is that the lock speed your talking about?

Cmyindy,
Are you refuring to the RPM as the trany goes through its shifts. Is it possible that the converter hase 3 levels of power transfer? And if so, why wouldn't i feel all three levels hit if i broke the tires loose in 1st and held that gear to WOT. ![]() [This message has been edited by herbj (edited December 10, 2000).] [This message has been edited by herbj (edited December 10, 2000).] |
