One of the very few advantages of getting older is you have more time to spend on the computer. Don't care about eating out, moma doesn't care about sex anymore, I've seen all the reruns on TV, my back won't let me bend over a car/lathe/mill, etc. But I still like to talk!
So I check the Moparchat, Moparts, my flathead Ford site, a couple of nostalgia drag sites and I look at the Drudgereport some(although most of it is BS too!). Went to the races last Friday night---walked so much I hurt my back again---suffered in pain the next four days. Maybe all these spinal decompression treatments will help. |

Sanborn,
I'm a little late on all the tips as I had already put everything together before I found the chat, but the next motor will use the great info. I do have a question maybe you could help me out. When I first put my 360 IMCA modified together it ran too cool and I was picking up condensation in the oil, I suspect too cool because of alcohol. I had a gutted thermostat in it and a single row radiator using plain water. Now I have put in a 180 thermostat with water wetter and it warms up good but once it warms up it will keep going up to 230 just sitting in the garage but the radiator only feels warm, and thermostat housing feels hot to the touch, I do have the bypass hose on it also but my condensation problem has gone away.....Any suggestions without tearing the heads off. Thanks! |

Make sure the t-stat is working properly. I recently had one fail - a first for me - by physically coming apart. The cage that held the wax bulb broke at one of the bends, and the valve would close the t-stat when rpm went up. Just idling, it was fine, but on the road, HOT.

I didn't get to play this weekend but I did change to a Stant thermostat and put a 18 lb cap on the radiator, it didn't seem to climb above the 180 mark but I will find out how it goes this weekend at the track. The thermostat I pulled out was a new one but a cheap one...I could push in on the center and it would open fairly easy compared to the new new one. I hope this is it!

Good Luck! P.S. I tried to put them in the order of use in the thread. I don't have all the photos, so they may skip a post or two. |

Center Water Feed
These photos are of a W5 headed 418 drag engine that I am finishing up. The idea here is to feed water to the paired exhaust ports in the middle of the head. This block is filled.

Pathways
They need to be separated. The water from the timing cover to the block center is a water feed going into the block. The water from the back of the head going to the thermostat housing area is a return. So they must be separate. You can run the two lines from the back of the intake manifold into one line, that isn't an issue. I think I have pictures of those lines on the work computer. I will check. Too many computers to keep track of these days.

Everyone, the info her is great, photos worth a thousand words. Do any of you have sanborns oiling mods photos saved? I have not been able to open the one in the typical oiling mods thread, I guess because of how long ago they were posted. any help appreciated
