From 1970 thru to 1980 Chyrsler Aus. had the Hemi 245 & 265 as it main engine. I've heard different things from that it was an abandoned engine from America to that it was a discontinued Jeep engine. If it does exist in America, all you slant 6 boys put one of these in your car and you'll have a garenteed 260+hp! Info. on this motor would be appriciated.

From all that I read in books and stuff...it was only used in Australia. A few may have made their way to the US..but finding them would be hard!
I'll see if I can find more on it. |

I have heard that it was used in Canada.
For you Americans, the 265 Hemi is a super strong 6 cylinder engine, with many heavy duty parts as standard. They are very torquey and cheap to hop up - all you really need is a big hydraulic cam, roller timing chain, double valve springs, and 4 barrell carby and intake to get a reliable 280 hp. They bolt straight in to 1200kg (around 2650lbs) Centura's for some serious fun on a budget. I love these engines! |

I'm from Canada and I have never heard of the 265 six being used here. From what I've read the motor was designed by Chrysler's Australia division and sold exclusivly there. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one and stuffing it in a dart. They sond like a great little engine.

Yes, and it has absolutely nothing in common with the /6. It has got seven main bearings, it's not slanted and it has a Hemi head with stud mounted rockers, I believe. I remeber reading that it was parially done to get experiences about the stud rocker Hemi, since Chrysler was going to repla its big blocks with 404&444 Hemis with stud mounted valve gear, both based on the B-block. Anyway, the power figures of the Hemi 6's sound almost too good to be true.

Yes definately not in Canada. Australia only.
Thought I read that they were only in Valiant Charger(245) and Valiant Charger R/T(265). |

All aussie valiants came with the hemi after the slant was laid to rest in 1969. Even Centuras (small chryslers) came with hemi's as an option.
The engine was originally being developed in the US by Chrysler. They dropped it to start development work on their small block V8. Australia picked it up finished development. Apparantly the design is very similar to the 4.0 litre six used in the Jeeps. David Thomson |

The 265 has the same layout as the jeep 6, but it is clearly a different engine.
I have had the pleasure of owning an R/T charger 265 and I guess most of the stories you may here about the 265 are true. I bought my R/T 12 months after the purchase of my E-55 340 Charger ( which I still own ) in '91. The 340 has quite a reputation in Aus, and I had the chance to compare the two engines' performance in basically the same car... Chrysler Aust. Valiant Charger ( approx. 3400 lbs ) ; The 340 is a very nice 'drivers engine' with plenty of torque and power. Whereas the 265 has good low end torque, and tyre fryin' power up in the revs. The 265 would spin the tyre ( open diff. ) from around 25 mph.clutch out and fry the tyre through 1 st. 2nd. & halfway through 3 rd gear ( 70 mph. ) The 265 drove as hard as my 340 and I had plenty of fun it it until I sold the R/T in '92 for $ 4300.00. The Aust R/T's are rare now, and worth around $ 30 000.00 for a good one. The '72 E-49 R/T charger ( 4 speed ) produced 302 hp @ 5500 rpm and had a 3.91' bore. 10:1 comp. 1.94"in. 1.6" ex. 3 - 45 mm webber carbs and a close ratio B/Warner 4 speed g/box. Top speed...140 mph. The '71 E-38 R/T's came with a B/W 3 speed and 280 hp. Top speed...130mph. |

I don't mean to throw water on your excitment. The Hemi 6 was a strong little package but, the hemi part of it was just a marketing gimmik. It did not have a hemi combustion chamber. The valves were in a traditional inline wedge chamber configuration. Dave

While in the Navy back in the early '70s I spent some time in and around Christchurch, New Zealand where I saw quite a few of those Hemi powered Valiant Chargers. They were sharp little Mopars! If I had the cash at the time I would have bought one and shipped it back home.
