Got to thinking about it the other night, this November it will be 10 years since Dad bought his '90 Cherokee Larado. He bought it with around 100k on the clock and it now has 281k.

I currently have two Challenger R/Ts-70 and 71. Bought the 71 in 1985 and the 70 in 1988. They were always resto projects/show cars, not drivers though. I ussually don't keep my drivers more than five years, but they are always in great shape when I get done with them. Plan to keep my current red '05 Hemi Ram QC for as long as I need or want a truck and won't get rid of it in five years. It's a blast.
My dad bought a new 63 Belvedere sedan-slant six, auto and AM radio, light blue in color. I remember when we picked it up brand new from the dealer. We drove it on vacation a couple of times in the early sixties, always from St. Louis to Colorado Springs. I remember me and my two siblings sleeping in the back seat at night on the way out west (my dad was too cheap to get a motel room for the night and that's probably why this one was a six banger!). Any way Dad sold it in 1967 to a lady who kept it till 1990. It had about 80K miles on it then, but the old six had thrown a rod and the car was sitting in the local salvage yard. The salvage yard is now located right across the street from our old house (the salvage yard was originally a lumber yard when we lived there). So, the last time I saw this car as a kid was in 1967, sitting in the drive of the old house. My dad found it again in 1990 sitting across the street from the driveway of our old house in 1990. Is that wierd or what? He still has the car today and it's in very decent shape. Dad has several other Mopars that he has owned for almost twenty years, but they also aren't daily drivers. Since he is 74 now, eventually I will get my pick of which of those I want to keep for my own collection, when he can no longer drive or cares about them. |

I bought a 90 GMC van in 94 and drove it until last January, when a rod started knocking, I put 694,000 miles on it. when I bought it it had 111,000 0n it and the engine was overhaulled at 95,000 due to gas being put in it.(it was a diesel van) and it still got 25 mpg at the end. hope this counts,,,Tom

I "inherited" a 74 Dart Sport on April 15, 1983, the day my little brother (his 19th birthday) was killed in a car accident (in my car he borrowed for his birthday dinner date with his girlfriend). I just left his 2nd owner Dart at my parents' house. I could not, or would not, push the memories away. Anyway, after letting this 318/auto car sit, with only 77k miles on it, for the next 23 years, I finally decided to get it running again.
I had to prime the carburetor, put in a new battery and start it. I started right up. I have now rebuilt the front end, repainted it factory colors (blue) with an original white upholstered top and now working on the interior with NOS fabric. It will be back on the road in the Spring 2008. I will drive it back up to my dad's house to let him see it. He has not looked at it for many years. |

Interesting, when you look at the numbers, it appears there's a dropoff once vehicle ownership gets between 15 to 25 years. I propose once you've had a car a decade and a half or so, you'll either have a life changing experience like a wedding or job change that'll require you to sell the car or sometime during that period you just decide you're tired of it and let it go. Of course, some of us regret that later, but there it is. However, once you've had it 25 years, odds are much better you're keeping it for good if at all possible.

I've had my 1989 Lebaron GTC turbo coupe for 12 1/2 years now. I just had to have the headgasket replaced but otherwise it's running fine after 175,000 miles although rust is really starting to show now but it should be good to 200k unless something major happens. I bought it used with 74,000 on it and haven't touched the 3-speed auto tranny so I hope it lasts.

My mom and dad bought a new 77 dodge heavy half ton van,3/4 ton suspension w/5 lug wheels. We made a camper out of it and drove it until 1989 when my parents sold it. I had a lot of fun in that old girl! It was my main transportation when I first got my license and my friends and I used it for towing our dirt bikes to races and trails and dating,of course! We owned it for 9 years and 7 months before we replaced the original battery, now I can't seem to get more than approx 4 years out of a battery. The good old days for sure.

A 1978 Toyota Corona, 20-R 4 banger. Owned since 1998. My dad bought the car from a friend and drove it about a year. He parked it in a field and lost interest in it. He was going to call the salvage yard to come get it, but in his wisdom, he asked me if I wanted it. I'm glad he did! All I had to do to get it running was put a battery in it and replace some missing exhaust manifold bolts.
I drove the car for about 6 years and parked it under the barn after I put another motor in my '95 Chrysler T&C. Still runs great! Only has had new alternator, battery, belts, wires, spark plugs, valve cover gasket and front crankshaft oil seal replaced since owning. I change the oil in all my vehicles that I drive at about every 3 thousand miles. I still crank it up every once in a while. Let me say...out of all of the 4 bangers that I have owned: The late 80's Plymouth Laser and Dodge Shelby Charger were the only two that had more power, of course they were fuel injected, and the Shelby was turbo. The early 80's Chevy Chevette and Ford Ranger were the weakest. There's no telling how many miles are still left on the Yota's engine! |
